When “Big” Is Really Just Passion, Effort and Ambition
I recently received a one-star review from a customer who, interestingly enough, loved the product. Her complaint? She thought she was buying from a small company, but, in her words, “this is a BIG company.”
Part of me took it as a compliment. Because if what I’ve built feels big, maybe it means it’s having the impact I always hoped it would.
But another part of me was genuinely upset.
Because I was being penalized for a perception rather than a fact.
So I started thinking about what “big” actually looks like from where I sit.
Big are the hours I pour into this business every single day.
Big is the money I continually reinvest instead of putting in my pocket.
Big is the amount of fine-tuning, testing, tweaking and second-guessing it can take to get one tiny detail exactly right.
Big is the endless list of problems I’ve figured out myself because, in the early days, there simply wasn’t anyone else to figure them out.
Big is caring about every detail because, as a founder, there is no one else checking your work.
Big is the passion behind our mission of body positivity, confidence and self-expression.
And yes, big is the ambition.
The ambition to build the brand I envision. To dream beyond where we are today. To create something meaningful, beautiful and lasting.
Because growing a business requires the ability to scale. And I absolutely want Appeeling to grow.
But I also know something else.
Growth doesn’t have to mean losing the human touch.
Like many small businesses I know, we want to grow while still knowing our customers, listening to them, responding to them, and caring deeply about the people who choose to support us.
There is a point where “small” can become limiting. But there is also a point where “big” can become impersonal.
I want neither.
I want to build a business that has the reach and ambition of something big, while retaining the heart, accessibility and personal connection of something small.
So if, one day, all of that reads as “big” to a customer, I’ll take it.
Just don’t mistake effort for scale.
Because sometimes what looks big from the outside is simply one very determined person, working very, very hard behind the scenes.
And perhaps that’s the best kind of big there is.
